Learn to Draw
Colored Pencils ... the Basics

Decide what you want to draw. Pick out 4 colors... here we are drawing a bear. We pick a light, medium, dark and outline color (the darkest). After you have sketched in your drawing... use the darkest color to draw the outline of your picture.

This is how I use my pencil when adding color. Laying the pencil down... using the side of the lead. I color in an area... adding more pressure to the pencil in the areas I want to make darker.

Holding the pencil up and down... this way you use the tip of the lead to draw. This is used when outlining the picture... and adding the detail. I also use this when I want something to be very shadowed (very dark!).

step2.jpg - 4348 Bytes
With the lightest color... I use the pencil's lead on it's side (shown above) to color in the entire bear. Near the edges and by the bear's muff I begin to add more pressure with the pencil to darken (add shadow). Darken the left side to show that the light is coming stronger on the right side of the bear.

step3.jpg - 4976 Bytes
With the medium color... I use the pencil's lead on it's side and begin to add more shadow to the bear.

step4.jpg - 5127 Bytes
With the dark color... I use the pencil's lead on it's side and continue to add more shadow to the bear.

step5.jpg - 5419 Bytes
With the darkest color... I use the pencil's lead standing up.. using more of the tip of the lead to add the bear's detail.

Practice practice practice... just enjoy your art! Don't make it a HAVE TO.. .make it a FUN WANT TO! I can still look at someone else's work.. and WISH I could draw like that! I always wish I could draw better... so what do I do... I practice!
