These samples have been reduced in size for this lesson.

I start off with a photo that I've taken (think of all the photos you have!). Being we visit lots of zoos... I like to use my animal photos. This is Amali and her mom from Indianapolis Zoo.

In Paint Shop Pro... or in your favorite editor... select to lighten your photo. Select BRIGHTNESS... lighten to the color you can work with. I do this so I can see the lines better when I draw the next step.

If the color distracts you... turn your photo to grey tones.

Click on LAYERS (top bar) and create a new layer.

I use the DRAW (make a line) tool to draw a line around the area I want to use as my colorbook page. Use the zoom tool to zoom right in so you can get the lines you want to use.

Click on EDIT... then click on COPY... then click on PASTE ... paste as new image. Viola... there is your colorbook page.

If you plan to use your color book page for painting programs... you need to make sure your lines are all closed. Zoom in to see that all lines are closed. The red areas show some of the places where the pixels need to be closed so when color is FILLED into the area it will fill only that area.
